Ia writer mono9/24/2023 ![]() Before the Synology Drive beta, there really wasn’t a reliable and secure solution that could enable syncing of a remote folder locally to the Android device (that I could find). From Android, you want to do the same without further steps, manual copying, manual connection initiation each time you want to edit, and so forth. From the desktop you want to simply open the file as normal. Ideally, one would want to store and edit markdown files from a folder of your choosing on your NAS without further work on your part. The version for Android is not much better and has crippling file management limitations. Access to other services is still not mature in iOS. Being able to smoothly access only iCloud from within iA Writer is not worthwhile if it is in a silo and cannot be synced to the NAS automatically (like most cloud services). Even NAS connections had to be refreshed and at the end of the day it was a manual process that imposed unnecessary friction. If you are not using iCloud the connections to other cloud services are clunky and unreliable. Even on iOS the file management limitations are maddening, to say the least. IA Writer, which I mentioned in a previous blog entry ( iA Writer impressions – Felix qui nihil debet ()), is a beautiful and compelling markdown editor, but it is mainly for iOS. This barrier meant that one was reliant on an individual app’s file management features (which in the case of iA Writer, the best markdown editor on Android, was, and continues to be, an unreliable and difficult to use proposition with severe limitations). ![]() Before the introduction of the Synology Drive beta, it was not possible to realistically sync a NAS folder of your choosing on to your Android device and have all changes sync back and forth without further action. A breakthrough in Android took place very quietly within the Synology NAS ecosystem which has finally opened up the ability to use the excellent markdown editor Obsidian on Android properly.
